Ripples From Walden Pond
By Richard Platt
Directed by Eric Poppick
The Old Town Theatre
Apr 16th through Apr 24th, 2012
Show Description
This one man show features Cygnet Resident Artist Francis Gercke (The Glass Menagerie, Our Town, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) as Henry David Thoreau.
Thoreau is the quintessential American archetype: self-reliant, blunt, hostile to rank and privilege, unwilling to accept any philosophy as true without the test of implementation, and above all fiercely and passionately steadfast in his insistence that government exists for the benefit of the governed, that its power is derived from the consent of the governed, and that each man is the equal of every other man and superior to any government. His questions are timeless: How, and to what end, shall we live our lives? What is the place of education in a free society? What are the duties of a just man to an unjust government? Ripples From Walden Pond is an account of the questions he asked, and the answers he lived.
