The Hot Wing King

SYNOPSIS:
Setting: Memphis. Now.
It’s time for the annual Hot Wang Festival down in Memphis, Tennessee, and Cordell Crutchfield is determined to take this year’s hot chicken crown. Supported by his beau Dwayne, and their culinary clique the New Wing Order which includes friends Isom and Big Charles, Cordell is marinating, and firing up the frying pan in a bid to claim the hot wing king crown. But when a family incident forces Dwayne to take in his nephew Everett, the weekend gets side-tracked, as the newly legitimized couple comes to terms with a new definition of family.

SEEKING:
Looking for AEA and Non Union queer actors of color, for Cygnet Theatre’s upcoming production of The Hot Wing King by Katori Hall.

EQUITY/ NON-EQUITY CALL:
Union performers are paid the SPT-6 $576 weekly minimum + health and pension.
Non-union performers are paid an hourly rate of $17.00 for rehearsals through tech.
Performances are a 4-hour minimum call.

WHEN:
September 17, 2024 10am – 6pm; Lunch 1:30pm – 2:30pm.
Callbacks: September 23.

Non Union Actors are encouraged to come on the day of the audition. When we don’t have an AEA appointment scheduled, we fully intend to accommodate non union actors on a first come first serve basis.

AUDITION PREPARATION: Please prepare a side for the character you’d like to audition for. To request sides and
script please email auditions@cygnettheatre.com. Please bring a copy of your headshot and resume.

HOUSING:
Local housing is subject to availability based on casting needs of the production.

CASTING BREAKDOWN:

CORDELL (Black, 40s)
The head chef of the clique. Recently emerged from the closet to co-habitate with Dwayne. In a not so former life, had a wife and 2 kids.

DWAYNE (Black, 40s)
Might not be the head chef, but is the head of the household. Holds Cordell and everyone down. Has been a mentor to his struggling nephew for years. Holds resentment towards Cordell for taking so long to legitimize their relationship.

ISOM (Black, 30s)
New friend. Play lists includes gospel and trap and that’s exactly how he talks. Met the duo at church.

BIG CHARLES (Black, 40s)
Old friend. Met the duo at the barber shop. Observant, laid-back. The Rock.

EVERETT “EJ” (Black/Latino/Asian/Mixed, 16)
Dwayne’s nephew. In need of guidance and a new home.

TJ (Black, 35)
Everett’s father. A long-time dealer who is “about that life” Struggles with teaching his son how to be a man, but unsure if Cordell and Dwayne can be good father figures to his son.
