Bed and Sofa
Music by Polly Pen
Libretto by Laurence Klavan
The Southern California premiere.
This three person musical comedy/opera is adapted from the 1926 Russian silent cult film by Abram Room. Billed as a "silent movie opera," it is the story of a husband and wife living in Stalinist Moscow who during a severe housing shortage bring in an old friend to live and sleep on their sofa. When unexpected romance begins to alter the balance of their relationships, the threesome try to make the best of their cramped quarters. Bed and Sofa is fresh and endearing and a wholly original piece of musical theatre.
